I have a studio in a small corner of our house with a window to the west. Very little light comes through the window, without any doubt that the glorious light of the Northern Great artists adored. But for me, the light from outside is unimportant since all my time in the studio when the moon trade places with the sun. You see, I paint the night, by moonlight, when most of creation is asleep. Alone, surrounded by darkness, except for an old lamp neck metallic green, I discovered a mysterious hidden world of images in me. I would like to believe that I am not really alone in my studio to say the presence of God transforms the tiny space in a cathedral where I receive a divine instruction. But the daily struggles that I met there, the frustrations and challenges that continue to surface the fears and doubts that rise like smoke from burning wood, quickly dispel the fantasy that my studio is a chapel where the sacred song of the angels. Because in fact, I hear that angelic voice of grunts, groans than holy hymns, and more witches than murmurs alleluias saints.
And yet, despite the stormy atmosphere of my studio in the moonlight, many creations were born there unexpected images whose source is hidden deep within. They broke into the darkness give no evidence of turbulence in their care as they make their way on paper. The final images you see, a merely as witnesses of the control process whose mystery I was caught for hours.
For me, the creative process is a consuming fire that continues unabated on my heels. Sometimes, I'm ready for capture and workflow. But for most, it takes courage, discipline and a daily commitment to walk naked in its flames. So I turn to the mystery of God whose face I can not see, but who has kindly given me the faces I can recognize mentors - artists, writers and poets of yesterday and today who show me the way. Then, in my darkest moments when even the moon seems to turn his gaze from me, a spark of light shining so I remember Vincent Van Gogh carrying candles in the brim of his straw hat when he painted outdoors midnight.
